Hey guys, what's the best way to clean out what I believe to be a clogged vent on the axle housing of my truck? It is a "mushroom" style vent, I guess you'd call it with a short post and a round top that sits like an umbrella.

Any ideas would be helpful!

They screw in, Remove it, throw it into solvent and don't reinstall it until you can blow through it freely.

How would one know when it's clogged and what are the consequences if it is?

take it off the axle and give it a shake. the top of it should be free to move ans so should the ball that's in it. the consequence is that the rear could start to build up heat which comes pressure and could lead to seal leakage.

51 Ashton has it exactly right. My 51 half ton started to have gear oil leak into one rear drum. It occured to me that since I was losing gear oil, I should check the level in the differential to be sure I had not lost a significant amount. I removed the fill plug, right after a drive, and heard air escape. That led me to the axle vent, which was compeletly plugged by corrosion and paint. I soaked it in gun solvent, replaced and never had a problem since. I cleaned up the drum but never replaced the seal and haven't had a leak and that was four or five years ago.
