I have a 1961 235 in my 52 pickup, I don't know how many miles are on the engine but when I bought it 2 1/2 years ago I changed the oil in it right away. I have been running 10w-40 in it since then. Granted I've only put about 1,000 miles on it, its under restoration projects quit a bit, but I have no oil leaks at all. May be luck but so far so good.

If there is just a slight black film, like mine were, then chances are that detergent oil was used so keep using it. If it is full of thick black crusty sludge then non detergent oil was used so don't start using detergent oil. It is more likely to cause chunks to break loose and clog the oil system than spring a leak.

Modern oils are far superior to 50's stuff. I use modern 30wt in mine year round. Most fellas use 10w-40 now that I have seen on this list. Think the crud falling off with detergent is an old-wives tail....or is that an old-wrencher's tale?
