You can use your original starter on 12 volts if you keep the engine in a good state of tune, so you don't have to crank the snot out of it to get it to start. The generator on the other hand would have to have different field wirings installed, not really worth the money seeing as how there are thousands of 12 volt generators out there that could be installed in place of your 6 volt generator, not to mention about "upgrading" to an alternator, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 91 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2011 Posts: 91 | Thanx Shark, I'm going with a "modern" harness. I think 11 circuits should do it. That will give me the option of 2 or 3 accessories if I remember correctly. With that in mind, how much should I spend? And, I'll find a 12 generator to install. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 90 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 90 | Hi 1fletch I just finished putting in an Ezwire harness in my 54 and mounted an Alternator, There are no ground wires with the Ez but the wires are marked every like 12 inches what they go too

It's a nice unit and I haven't encountered any issues so far. Mine is an EZ 20 mini. I think I paid $135 on ebay for it.

It has GM color coded wires, larger wires than stock on things like headlight, alternator and ignition circuits and plenty of length to the wires for custom installation. | | |
