Back on the road and it runs OK, but smokes, looks like from all cylinders. Will just running it resolve the smoking? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 | Hy Tierod, welcome, was the engine hard to crank when you went to restart it? Did you seal the carb, and exhaust when you put in storage? How many miles did it have on it when you put it in storage? If the cylinder bores were excessively rusty when you restarted you may have damaged the rings. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,885 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,885 | www.kanolabs.comPull the spark plugs and pour a couple of ounces of Kroil into each cylinder, then let it sit for a few days. If the rings have rusted into the piston grooves, the penetrant should free them up. Then give it a hard run of a couple of hundred miles at highway speed, or as close to keeping up with traffic as the gear ratio will let you do. The smoke should clear up unless you've got extremely deep pits in the cylinders. Jerry

Follow Hotrod Lincoln's suggestions.
Run it for 1000 miles and report back. This might resolve the smoking and you really have nothing to lose (unless it starts getting noisy - if that happens stop driving it and report back).
My truck sat in a dirt floor unheated garage in NY for 16 years. It still drives quite nicely (since 1997) - you may be so lucky.
