The Hylomar looked rather impressive. The problem is that the price also looks impressive... http://www.hylomar-usa.com/_resources/_html/order.html Has anyone here used this? Would you recommend something else? I am thinking of this stuff for the rear axle cover right away...and other covers if/when I pull those.

I would recommend this stuff and it is available over the counter at any GM Dealership. It has worked when ALL of the others didn't. It is: GM Gasket Sealing Compund 1#1050026 Gr.8.800. It never hardens or dries out. Temperature range from -50F to 400F. I first used it on the rear end housing of my truck and have since used it on all other components of the truck. I think you will be happy with it! Joe

If the surfaces are clean, dry and flat then the seal is 99.9% mechanical. I use HIGH TACK aerosol. It's a contact adhesive which holds the gasket where it belongs and adds the .1% goop factor to seal things like cork gaskets. If you application calls for a gasket then it probably doesn't call for a glob-o-goop too! Dirty mating surfaces with 'pooched' bolt holes and overtightened fasteners are the cause of leaks most of the time. A dab of goop here or there is OK, but not hanging out of every crack like hemorrhoids.  Stuart | | |

Stuart The thing about 'roids made me laugh. I have replaced a number of engines seized up/knccking due to globs of silicone(from a previous repair) clogging the oil pump pickup. Never understood the "some is good, more must be better" fellas. | | |

(But I will admit, in case anyone looks closely, I used sealant on my exahust side to seal up what is technically a warped exhaust manifold...but only a bit.)

Used it for years with no issues, but still comes down to proper surface preperation of course.
