Hello gentlemen! I have a 1954 3100 with a 235. I need to change or rebuild the fuel pump. I do not care if I stay stock or not. My question is should I rebuild or replace the old one. The price seems to be about the same for the repo part as a rebuild kit. This is not a vac. type pump nor do I need one.

Wow, I didn't even know you could buy a rebuild kit. From a practical standpoint, if everything is a wash economically, buy a rebuilt pump, and take your wife or girlfriend to the movies using the time you saved rebuilding it yourself.

If you dig working on stuff like that, and would feel good about saying 'I rebuilt my own fuel pump', do it yourself!

My usual experience would go something like this;

Buy rebuild kit.

Pull pump apart.

Discover pump body is worn out and not rebuildable.

Buy rebuilt pump.

Attempt to return repair kit...NO RETURNS!

Drink self into a stupor.

I know it's good without the potential problems as my luck usually goes like yours. The rebuild kit is $30 from american classic. The new replacement type pumps look to be the sealed don't work on me type. Thanks again Jason

just buy a pump and install if pump is bad return for another if you buy a kit and something wrong you own it...doc

I replaced my glass pump with a 'new' modern one and haven't had any problems in the last 12 years with it. Would love to rebuild the old one some day, but for now, running is running.

Where did you find the rebuild kit? I put a new fuel pump on my 235 yesterday because I didn't trust the one that was on it. The repo worked good for about 15 miles and then deceided to take a little break. It will pump enough gas for a quick idle, but out on the road it won't keep up. It's a tad bit " :mad: " when you spend good money on bad parts and it leaves you broke down it places you'd rather not be.

if you are going to replace it anyway get a dual action with vacumn pump to power the wipers. ron

Have you checked for obstructions on the suction and discharge side of the pump as well as the needle and seat of the carburetor.

Sometimes the simple operation of replacing the pump dislodges junk that play havoc with small orifices. I would check everything before I sentenced the pump to life in prison.

Hi Atomarc. I'm pretty sure it's the pump because I put the old one back on and it ran fine. But you're right, seems like that always happens. I'm not sure why the new pump won't keep up at speed. I'd like to take it apart and find out, but I don't think I'd get my refund back. Thanks for the tips though, help is always appreciated.

I just rebuilt my carb on a 53 Chevy 235 now it seem it was the glass fuel pump stops once truck get hot. Wanted to keep thing original but can’t find rebuild kit or rebuilt pump .help
