For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 174 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 174 | Hey there, im new on here and just got my 1953 GMC on new years... well at least i think its a 53, the previous owner got it in his dads will and believes its a 53 but my VIN says otherwise. The only problem I've ran into is it doesnt have the original engine in it... engine VIN doesnt match on the door VIN, does anybody know how to read them? I've got the truck turning over, just had the carb rebuilt but forgot to pick it up before the weekend, hopefully it will start up now. but i think my vacuum might be dead. is there anyway to tell? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | the truck engine number and number on the cab plate would not have been the same. the government could have used either one to register the truck with.
Check out the tech tips at the top of this page for help with identification. If that fails there are some great guys on here that can and will help you out. (I didn't see any grille photos) | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 174 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 174 | Im guessing its either a late '53 or maybe early '54 just pieced together with left overs, its got the grill from all previous years.
Does anybody know anything about the vacuum? im pretty sure my wipers are vacuum operated but there not working and fuel suction into the carb is pretty low (i dont have an air filter on it so i just put my hand over the top of my carb, not a lot of suction) | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Josh_53GMC, Welcome, if you would post the numbers from the door post we could tell you what it should be. You won't feel a lot of vacuum with the engine just cranking over, unless you completely cover the top of the carb, your vacuum accessories will not operate without the engine running, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 174 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 174 | tclederman the good and the bad with this truck is its a barn find, fresh out of saskatchewan... bad news is the engine is covered in mud, in some spots its close to an inch thick, i did manage to scrape away enough to see some numbers on the intake manifold but nothing by the distributor | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | Josh,
I deleted my earlier post about engine codes (etc) because it is a Canadian GMC - foreign territory for me.
Looking at your flickr page 4 photos, it's a 1953 GMC cab - split windshield and the dash is not a 54 dash (it is 53 or earlier).
