While cleaning up the rear brakes I noticed there is a paper gasket between the axle hub and brake drum. I have not seen these at the parts vendors. Anyone familiar with them? Here's a picture:

Thanks Tim. I guess I didn't check enough vendors.

Has anyone ever figured out the reason there is a thin paper gasket there?????
In all the time I've been involved with this stuff I've never heard a definitive let alone a logical answer to that question.
There is "NOTHING" to seal there!!!
That reminds me of the boiler patch that was on a US war ships steam boiler that the Japanese captured. They copied the design right down to the patch. No need for it on a new boiler but it was there so they just included it in their copies.

To stop "rust weld" of the drum to the axle flange? (just a guess)

A gasket seems to be used on a lot of vehicles but it is not clear if the gasket is needed for for an oil seal on some of those vehicles)?

I was thinking it is to space the shoes in the drum where they will get best stopping surface and keep them away from the face of the drum.

But the rust weld makes better sence.

The "gasket" has a thickness similar that of a brown paper bag.

We never deal with tolerances that close here.
