In all the time I've been involved with this stuff I've never heard a definitive let alone a logical answer to that question. There is "NOTHING" to seal there!!! That reminds me of the boiler patch that was on a US war ships steam boiler that the Japanese captured. They copied the design right down to the patch. No need for it on a new boiler but it was there so they just included it in their copies.

(just a guess) A gasket seems to be used on a lot of vehicles but it is not clear if the gasket is needed for for an oil seal on some of those vehicles)? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | i have remnates of this on my dump and wondered what it was for. i think tim nailed it. That reminds me of the boiler patch that was on a US war ships steam boiler that the Japanese captured. They copied the design right down to the patch. No need for it on a new boiler but it was there so they just included it in their copies. i find that very funny since i ran boilers for 31/2 yrs on a carrier. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 163 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 163 | I was thinking it is to space the shoes in the drum where they will get best stopping surface and keep them away from the face of the drum.
But the rust weld makes better sence. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | The "gasket" has a thickness similar that of a brown paper bag.
