The foot starter usually works well but sometimes, when I depress the foot starter, it grinds as if the flywheel and starter aren't meshing properly. Is there a spring or something that may need to be replaced? Are you using the 1953 clutch assembly and 1953 flywheel?
If yes, the teeth on the flywheel is for a 6v starter - are you using a 6v or 12v starter?

As mentioned, it usually works well, maybe one time out of four, it grinds, not sure if its actually the flywheel or something in the starter. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 23 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 23 | This is a common problem I believe with worn starter drives. 6 volts does not matter with 12 v. driving it. flywheel is 139 teeth Starter with nine is correct combo. When the starter is depressed it can stop inbetween teeth. When it is pushed further, the spring in back of the starter drive is compressed. When contact is finally made electrically, the starter drive will turn and snap into the flywheel, because of the spring pressure on it. If it grinds it is because of one of wear on drive or flywheel.

The one way clutch is damaged in such a way that it is loose in the housing. I started to have grinding noises with it and it did some damage to the flywheel very quickly.
