For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 74 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 74 | Hiya, ive a 1953 Chevy panel truck, and am doing a Patricks rear end kit,
all is going fine, im just not sure what lubrication to put in both the rear end and the gearbox. (its an original 3 speed on the colum./)
can someone help as the "operators manual" states not to use straight mineral oil in Hypoid rear axles, but ive look into some things on here and they say use mineral?
also some stuff about brass bushes in the gear box getting worn / damaged if i dont put the correct lub in?
thankyou, Dan

Your transmission can use hypoid gear oil. That is for the differential also. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 74 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 74 | do i need to look for an oil that has "Meets requirements of API GL-5." or is Gl - 4 ok too?
will and of the above be sutable for the gearbox too?
thankyou for your help

You can use it in the trans. & rear end. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Like in a previous post some of the trans grease will likely leak back into the diff. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though.
