For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 32 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 32 | My 316 has only about 50,000 miles and has been outside for 50 plus years. Now it does run and sounds ok. I am thinking of having the gaskets replaced and engine gone over by an engine shop. Would I be better off to just get a 350 and replace the 316 and have an engine easier to maintain and run??? thanks for you ideas

Everybody and their mother has a 350. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,766 Carburetion specialist | | Carburetion specialist Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,766 | If it is going in the 56 dump as in your username, the Pontiac 317 should work much better than a 350.
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. I'll do some checking. There is a engine rebuilder shop in Indiana near the Illinois line that used to be a home for old Pontiac blocks asking to be rebuilt. Give me a day and I'll check with relatives who trade with that shop. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 181 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2011 Posts: 181 | 56dump, The source I was referring to is Rebuilders Inc. in the Terre Haute, IN. area. I tried to bring up a website but couldn't find any. Maybe some one else in this conversation could offer more information. If you do one at a time, its pretty easy, theres no magic involved. Any local machine shop can do it if you don't want to, but it will save you some cash to do it yourself. The later Pontiac's leak at the rear main and occasionally the front seal, I never worked on the older ones, but they are similer in design.
Keep the Pontiac, there are to many 350 power trucks as it is!
If you were closer to Kansas City, I would do it for you. Dad and I have been building Pontiac's since he bought a new '55.

I have a young fellow working with for me and we got her running last night. sounds Ok. Now I have replaced the Gas tank but still woried about rust, have one filter up near the carb and i think another off gas tank. plan to run some gas throught and catch in a container and see what we have. The carb has been gone over by Jim Carter so don't want to plug up. Any advice is appreciated. tom | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,210 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,210 | Doesn't sound like you need any help, you are doing everything right so far.
