I have a 1954 Chevy 5 window pickup and I am looking for some information about the engine. I have looked at Tim's truck page. There are no numbers on the block where he shows the block casting code and no numbers where he shows the block date casting codes. In fact the only numbers I have been able to find on the block at all are the number 2 above GM on the front right of the block and the following numbers on the distributor plate 06577 30 F54M. The head casting number is where it says on Tim's page and is 3835913. Where else could the casting and date codes be? The Engine Cast # will tell you when it was used in production... As example mine current engine is 3769716 and it was used from 1958-1962 and is a 235 CI ... Many of these old truck engines were replaced as mine was twice... Yours might be the original engine... Either way the Engine Cast # will be in the same place... You can also run your Vin # through The VIN Buster ... Your vin plate is located here on the left side of your cab between the door hinges...

3835913 is the head casting code on a 1954 or 1955 first series 235 engine.
F54M as part of an engine serial number would indicate a 1/2 ton 1954 (3100) truck made in Flint, MI and having a Hydra-Matic (automatic) transmission. Can you post a photo of that plate? It might be an engine code plate that was at one time attached to the Hydra-Matic transmission (the Hydra-Matic's engine and transmission were matched at the factory).

As Tim said, it is a 54. Casting number will be more accurate than stamped engine number, since they might have stamped it back.
