So Im in a delema... i have a 1952 3/4ton Chevy pu that desperately needs new drums. problem is that i cant find any.
The front are the same as a 1/2ton, so i can buy reproductions, but the rear are the larger 12"? and are not made anymore. i have one broken rear drum, so returning these are not an option.
So.....my question is..... how and where can i get drums? its hard enough to find ones on a 1/2 that are turn-able, letalone a 3/4.
Also....is it a posibility to use drums off say a 60's pu or something?

thanks

Jim Carter's used to list them, but I haven't had an updated catalog in a while.
Medium duty trucks changed from Huck to Bendix brakes in 1953. A later Bendix drum will not work on your Huck setup because the offsets are different. List a want ad in the swapmeet here. Some guys pull theses axles out and scrap them because nobody wants them. Finding a '53 or later complete rear axle might be a good move for better parts availability.

If the front are the same as 1/2-ton your front axle has been changed. Or maybe you have a 1/2-ton truck with a 3/4-ton rear axle. At any rate, you need to be sure what you have. That may be a later 3/4 ton axle in the rear.

1/2 tons and 3/4 tons of the Huck brake era shared the same 11" front brakes. The drums are the same except for the lug pattern and the hole size for the hub. I'm guessing that's what he means by that.

I guess your definition of 'same' is different from mine. Six lug and 8 lug drums are not the same and will not interchange.

I'm not aware of any trucks leaving the factory with 6 lug front and 8 lug rear axles. If there were, Id like to see documentation.

I didn't say they interchange and I didn't say any trucks had 6 bolt fronts and 8 lug rears.

You're right cletis, they are not the same.

Seems like the question is your differential an original 3/4ton,which that is what I have, and the axles, are 8lug,and the pig has been changed from original 513gears,to 456gears.I have the drums,if these are the ones you need? Thanks

Jim Carter and one other vendor used to list the 3/4 Ton rear drums. I can't find my way around the new and "improved" Jim Carter site but if you haven't looked, you should. I bought some 1/2 Ton drums from him and they looked nice but one was turned .015" over. They were also a one piece casting but I think the originals were not. They were made in Argentina, not China.

hey, first off thanks for the replies. I know for sure they are huck brakes. also both front and rear have 8 lugs. is there a way to tell if it is the original 3/4 axle? i think so but not absolute.

i might take you (Z71chevy) up on that axle.

....but u guys are great!!!!!!!! i found the drums.... http://secure.oldchevytrucks.com/Brake-Drums-1946-1952-Chevrolet-and-GMC/productinfo/MEB126/

If the drums slide off the lugs after removing a couple flathead screws, it's original (or near enough). If the drum is mounted to the hub as a unit, then it is a replacement. Huck brakes have one double-ended WC with an adjuster on each end. Bendix brakes have only one adjuster. Replacement Bendix drums are available. Hucks are harder to find.

If you could get a rear axle for a 1953, you could buy the brake drums as they appear to be the same up to 1959. There is a place called "Old Car Parts" and they seem to have a lot of old NOS parts. You might want to give them a call.
