I need to add some fluid to my 1954 3104 Hydra-Matic... Did a search as to what type of modern brand of fluid to use and came up empty... The person at NAPA what worked as a GM mechanic for many years suggested Dextron lll ( 3 ) but said to ask others to be sure...

I ent through the same thing. It seems that type A was made from whales or something like that that caused it to be removed from the parts shelves. I have been using Dextron on the suggestion of Bill Miles. I think the general concensus was that the bads and clutch disc face of H-M trans is very soft and something like a type F would be hard on them.

I talked with Gene at Restoration Hydramatics.

Gene said I should use Dextron lll ( 3 ) but that would depend on when my Hydra-Matic was rebuilt... Mine was done sometime I think in the late 70's early 80's... So if your Hydra-Matic has been rebuilt it may require different fluid type depending on when it was rebuilt...
