My mid 80s Cadillac tilt/tele column has a safety switch clamped on. I realise it's simply a matter of splicing the wire to the starter,but can anyone tell me which connections on the switch to use? There's more than one per side. I've tried working it out with a test lamp but no joy. | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 63 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 63 | Around that era they used switches at the base of the column for a neutral switch and the other pair were for reverse . check with a meter ot lamp with the shift in park and neutral for continuity and in reverse for the same , failing that in the bin with it. The column was a swap-meet special so I didn't remove it from the original donor. I assumed the two sides were for the feed and ground of the circuits. I'll get back into the garage tonight and check. This allows the voltage from the start position of the ignition switch to be routed through the neutral switch to prevent starting the engine with the transmission in gear. The other set of contacts will only have continuity in Reverse, allowing a backup light to be switched on. Most neutral switches have a slotted base to allow minor adjustment of position to assure the contacts make at the proper shifter position. Jerry

I've heard horror storys about guys who didn't install a switch. A guy down south 'rearranged' the back of a guys Deuce at a show last year!!
