Most of the trucks in the flickr pool have no ornament at all as you suggested. If anything, they have the center strip chromed. Pretty cool. The 51 car orinment is a styleized Impala. The 51 to 53 54? orniment is similar, but is flattened, and squared off. That orniment maybe a car orniment, but it sticks in my mind as a prior year truck orniment. It was believed that this ornament was dealer installed. I have seen it on more than I can count. It was not the one that Chevrolet offered for the truck, but more of a generic one that the dealers put on. found some pics on taillightking that look like that. I believe not all cars had a hood ornament installed.
My 48 Chevy Fleetmaster 4 door sports sedan was 100% original when I got her and she did not have an ornament
