What options do i have for changing my master cylinder in a 1954 4100 to a dual mstr cyl with vacuum boost? will one of the commonly available conversion units available for the smaller trucks work as I have seen none for a 1.5 ton listed. I am fairly new to this so please excuse my ignorance.

pgh,

The MC bore is not the same for 1/2 ton and 1-1/2 ton trucks. The bigger trucks have larger wheel cylinders that require more fluid to engage the brake shoes. If you use a small MC the pedal will be on the floor before the shoes hit the drums. You need to look for a modern 1-1/2 ton truck setup as a donor.

Actually, I used a 1970 C10 master on my 48 4400 and have more braking power than it ever did prior. The master is split in two so in reality you have more going to each end,

Thanks, I figured there would be a change in the mc bore size. Larger bore, move more volume in the same stroke.I wonder how that relates to pressure applied, if at all, larger surface area more psi? Is the bore 1.5 inches on the 1.5 ton and 1.25 on the 3/4 ton?
Reovering from a gass well accident, so I have lots of time to plan this project out.

Scott, did your changeover include a vacuum boost? If so where did you put it, firewall or underneath. Did you have to fab your own bracket or will one of the prefabed ones work?
Thanks

I make all my stuff, I usually over engineer everything. I did mount mine under the floor with a booster,

Scott, did you buy a new one, or did you get one that needed a rebuild?
If new, do you remember where you bought it?

Hi pghblacksmith. Welcome to stovebolt
I am presently in the process of upgrading to dual master cylinder. I am keeping my brake drums and booster.I purchase a new rebuilt drum/drum master cylinder with the same dia. bore (1.250"),and kept the same wheel cylinder. It will be under the cab and the booster will be connected to the back brakes.I had to make a bracket to accomodate the new larger master cylinder. The work should be done within the next week and I will be posting photos of the final setup. I will keep you posted

I still cant make up my mind if I am going for 100% orig rebuild/ restoration of the truck, or make the changes for safety and convienance. I need to make up my mind soon as the new workshop is almost done.
