welcome. I would hate to work on a 60 year old rust belt truck! Keep in mind you may be way ahead of the game by finding a used transmission rather than dumping a lot of money into the one you already have. Have fun!

the trucks pretty rust free, the frame must have been cleaned and painted recently too. what transmission should i be looking for? this one has a PTO, but the dump bed has been replaced with a flatbed so i wont be needing that on a replacement.

Welcome to the bolt. This is a great place for information.
If the truck has a 4 speed transmission in it, It will most likely be a SM420. This transmission was used from late 1947 through 1967. It is a great transmission. It is very popular with ones building rock crawlers. The PTO was an add on unit, and should have a cover on the side of the transmission where it bolts on.
Have fun.

So it should'nt be hard to find a replacement, thats good. From what I remember those are nearly impossible to break so that probably isnt the problem. most likely something went wrong with the clutch. my friend said after the clutch was replaced he started it, put it in gear, heard a big bang and now nothing. im gonna drop the trans and check that out. Is the PTO deletable without ruining the trans?

The PTO should be bolted on from the outside. It can be removed without removing the transmission. If it has a drive line still attached to it, you may have to remove it or disconnect it.

If you are not going to use the hoist, you might as well remove the PTO if you can find a cover for it.
