I want to put headers on the 283 in my 57, but I'm worried about clearing the steering gearbox. It seems like the longer tubes would be extremely close to the gearbox, and either require bending, or it would heat up the grease in the box from being to close.

Anybody have any tips or ideas which headers would fit better?

I have headers on my 57, it also has a 283. They are long tube with no clearance problems. I put them on back in 1979, if I remember correctly I couldn't get them for a 57. I think they were for a 73-79 chevy truck.

sounds good. Ive seen some pics where the headers go pretty darn close to the steering gearbox, ever hear of the lubricant in the box getting to hot changing the viscosity in a bad way?

I used a set of Sanderson shorty headers in my '56 with a SBC, they worked out great with lots of clearance. Should mention mine had a mustang II rack and a late model steering column.

what was the part number on those Sandersons

I have Corvette headers - center dump, no clearance issues.

You can buy repop chinese Corvette 2 1/2" center dump Dorman manifolds on line for around $50-75 each.
