Anybody know of a simple way to paint a set of steel wheels w/the tires mounted? Is there a simple way ? I know they make a disk to cover your wheel when you are cleaning your tires but what about covering the tires and leaving the wheels to get to ? Any help is appreciated!
You could have them sand blasted with the tires on, or strip them. Mask them off and paint them. I would think if you were going through all that trouble, you would take the tires off and have the inside of the rims blasted or rust removed also. Even just wire brush the inside of the rim real good and use up some old spray can paint on them.
ive painted two different sets. one with a brush and roller and one with rattle cans topped of with wheel clear. both came out nice and are holding up better than i thought they would. do not use white masking tape to tape the tires off with. i did on two wheels to use up the cheap tape. when i removed the tape the tires were white from the glue on the tape. i had to remove it with lacquer thinner which took a while. with the brush and mini roller on the second coat you can put it on a little heavy to build it up and it's not as messy as it is with the rattle can.
Ashton, What is "wheel clear" ? I thought about rolling cause I did my frame with a brush and roller (por 15) turned out great. Rattle can is messy but at least I can take the wheels off of my truck ,tape up the wheels and start spraying. HAGD, Mike
Here is a idea. You can put grease or oil on the tire. after you wire brush them or sand them down. Then paint it. After the paint is good and dry you can wash off the oil or grease and all the over spray will wash off with it.
I don't think grease or oil is a good idea. Grease and oil is the last thing you want in the area when painting. Just use some old newspapers and masking tape to cover the tire. It's a lot less work than anything else.
HAHA, Ya I know it. But I dont see why it would not work. I think it would take longer cause your paint would have to be dry before you could wash it off. And you would have to make sure you got non on the rim. I always put grease on drill bits to keep shavings out of areas so I figured it would keep paint out as well. LOL
