I had my mechanic put a set of 3.38 gears from Patrick's in my 1942 Chev PU. The rear end was a 55T...3.90 rear end from a 1957 Chev. PU...

The problem is the rear differential cover plate will not go over the new gears... Does anyone know if there is a different cover that will work for this...

eek have you talked to Patricks? they're really good about talking over problems .... there's only one factory 3.90 rear in the TF years, and if that gearset is made/sold to replace the gears, and it can be installed in the carrier, it sure oughta fit under the cover!!

I'd give Patrick a call 1st thing today, if you're sure that rear is a 57, and you ordered a gearset for 57 ..... well, actually even if you're not sure grin

Called Patrick's and they said sometimes the rear cover is smaller and will not fit over the new gears...

My mechanic had a welder friend work on the cover and he extended it about 1 inch to the rear.. works great..

The 3.38 replacement really makes a difference in the rpms in all speed ranges...got to help gas mileage and wear on the engine.
