will a factory tach from a 1965 v6 truck fit and work in a 64 230 6 cylinder pickup ?

Not sure, but if one is a GMC and the other is a Chevy, the Dashboards are very different.

I believe the GMC's all used Sun tachometers, which in that time period used a separate transmitter box. As long as the box was labeled for 12 volts and 6 cylinders it would work fine. The tach didn't care if the engine was inline or a V configuration. As noted above I don't know if the dash layouts are compatible, however early Sun tachometers were assembled with screws and nuts. If the layout requires just the tachometer mechanism, and the V6 version is in fact a Sun model, the mechanism can be easily removed and adapted to the other dash installation with a little creative engineering.

thanks for the info about the control box for the tach. The donor truck is missing control box. I think that sinks my idea to install it.. Maybe I'll have the tach modernized so I don't need a control box.

Those old Sun tachs are hard to find, if it is nice you can find a control unit for it......I just paid $85.00 for one without the sender........it is for my 66 GMC I also found a nos sun bat-o-meter which is really rare to finish off my 66 daqsh.
