I have a 37 1/2 ton PU Great Lil Truck A older gentleman owned & drove to high school & owned truck til he was 68 yrs old & passed away & I bought truck! In 1957 he put a 56 265 V-8 in in & super old school! They Cut the 6 Cyl Bell housing & V-8 Bell housing In 1/2 & welded together so still has 4spd granny low trans & closed driveline! My Question is will a truck 3 speed out of a 40 chevy pu fit in place of 4 speed? I would rather run 3 speed as I don't need granny low! Has anybody that you know of done this & will a 40 fit? Does the shift lever have a small rod on the left side that goes to a metal lever that you lift up on to put it in reverse? If it does its a pre 48 big truck 4 speed transmission. I think that 46 was the first Chevrolet light truck to have a 4 speed transmission. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 6 | Yes It Does Have A Lever! Would a 3 Speed go back in & a 40 work? It has the clutch linkage hooked to the side of trans! Did 37's have that also? It has bosses on either side of the transmission as mounting points for (left side) brake master cylinder and (right side) emergency brake. The rear of every Chevy '6' block (216, 235, or 261) is the same from 1937 through 1962, and the flywheel/crank-flange pattern is the same from '41-'62. So theoretically a 3sp from a '40 would fit the '37. Here's a pic of the original configuration on a '37: http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g369/J-reb/1937_Chev_Pickup/37_Chev_Trans.jpg
