For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 20 | Hi, I've been thinking about replacing my stock torque tube rear end. does any body know of one that is a "bolt in" replacement and has 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern? It would have to be a used unit, not new. Thanks, Keenan | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy 485window, welcome, please remember to tell us what year and size of truck you are asking questions about. I am going to assume that you have a 48 Chev five window half ton. You can remove the torque tube from your rear axle housing, and install the center from a 55B - 59 Chevy half ton, this will allow you to keep the rest of your truck stock, but give you an open driveline, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 452 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 452 | Remember, if you go that route, you will have to weld up the axle mount pivots or find some other way of securing your axle to the springs. Right now the torque tube maintains the proper geometry, and the axle is hinged to the springs.
Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice) \'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run. My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.
