i have the front end off the truck (53 3600) and would like to take the eng and xmsn out as a unit
however
it appears that the xmsn will not clear the crossmember and there is not much room above it
the crossmember is rivited to the frame rails

i plan to take the drv shaft out too so if i have to i could drop the xmsn and take it out separately but when everything is ready for install i'd like to have all the clutch work done and put it back in as a unit
i'm also planning on getting one of the rearend up grades from patricks should i change the ds to an open one or keep the original?
thanks

I have removed some of these over the years,
You really have most of the work done, if you have removed the front end.
I just got through changing a 1950 235 to a 1961 with a "PowerGlide" transmission. The Automatic is harder to manuever in the space available than a standard . I just unbolt the motor mounts, remove the two nuts which hold the tranny to the crossmember, slide everything forward approx 6 inches, then adjust the lift so the engine tilts up at the front. Takes two people to do the job.

I am not aware of an upgrade for the 3/4 Ton rearend. They do make them for the 1/2 Ton.

the xmsn is behind the crossmember
i don't think it will move 6 inches fwd
i'll have another look at it today
i'm on my own
would using an engine leveler/tilter allow me to remove it myself?

thanks
i have ane email into patricks asking if their high speed kit will work on a 3/4 ton
we'll see

No way no how will you get the 4 speed transmission out with the transmission attached... unless you remove the cab.

Drop the transmission and remove the engine and bellhousing as an assembly.

The 3600 is a 3/4 ton. It should have a HO52 Eaton rear end. Most likely the gears are 4.56:1, however 5.14:1 was an option. The best you can do with that rear is 4.11:1 from a 67-72 3/4 ton with an automatic.

Just to give you an idea, I have the 4:10 rearend in my 1 Ton. I run 16" tires and my RPM at 60 mph is around 2700. I don't generally go over 60 and most of the roads I use have a 50 mph limit.

yep it looks as though i have some work to do to get the rearend upgraded
another thing
the front half of the ds is closed and the back half is open
is that standard?
could/should i change it to all one or the other?
just curious

thanks

If you change transmissions you could go with many open driveline OD transmissions. To give you an idea, a standard 27% OD will make your 4.56 gears feel like 3.34 gears

Possible transmission swaps include but are not limited to the T5, A833, and NV4500. I would not reccomend a T5 in a truck larger than 1/2 ton, but then again it all depends how you will use your truck. If you still have the 216, you might have to swap out to a 235 or 261 to give you more power.

where would i find the rearend id?

so if i hear you correctly i could get any of those xmsns and they would bolt right in. then i'd have to get a one piece open ds that goes from xmsn to rearend

i am removing the 216 (cracked block) and have a 54 235 going in
i don't plan to haul anything with it just get it a good paint job and drive it till it sells
then start on the 51 2 ton or the viking

thanks

You seem to have the standard setup for a 3/4 Ton. The rearend is known as an HO52. You won't find a bolt in OD transmission as any of them would require changes. The change in the rearend gearset to 4.10 is a bolt in.

No bolt in OD changes...
T5 requires a new shifter location and a driveshaft.
A833 requires either turning the bearing retainer down from 5.125 inches to 4.686 inches, or boring the bellhousing out from 4.686 inches to 5.125

The NV4500 requires an adapter plate, and the 94-97 dodge version works best.

All these transmissions will require driveshaft work, and a hole cut in the floor for the new shifter locations.

Be aware the 1/2 ton rearend is not a bolt in, the driveshaft length on the 1/2 is fixed. The shock mounts are different there are some modifications that will have to be made. If you elect to go this route be advised a 1/2 ton frame and a 3/4 ton frame are very different. You may be better off finding a correct width rearend from a more modern 3/4 ton (it has been discussed here before). Then matching that to the new trnasmission/driveline you select. If you elect to keep with the SM-420 you will need to find a 54-59 open drive version.

i would have never guessed that this would be as "interesting" as it has turned out
i was advised by patricks to go to my junk yard and have them look up the compatibility of rearends in the hollands manual
i guess i'll do that when i get off work next week
i'll post what i find out and opt to do as soon as i know what that will be
that way you guys may keep me from doing something i'd regret

thanks
