I have seen them somewhere different intake manifolds that let you put 2 single barrel carbs or ! four barrel carb on a 235 engine.... my question is... is there any advantage to swapping the old single barrel for either of these setups?

The advantage is that there is better fuel distribution in a multiple carb setup. Others will argue this point but it seems reasonable. A single four barrel would not have any advantage IMO except to use a lot more gas. I have dual Holley Weber's on mine and it runs fine w/o being over-carbuerated.
