I know what the choke cable is for. What is the throttle cable for? I assume it is to set the idle speed of the engine bedsides having a idle set screw or in addition to the idle set screw. Help me Obi Wan Kenobi you're my only hope.

The main use for the throttle would be for PTO operated equipment. Why it was standard on AD pickups is anyone's guess but people found uses for them.
When I was in my early teens we were visiting my uncle's dairy farm. My cousin asked if I wanted to help him feed. He put a few bales in the bed of the AD and I hopped in the cab. When we got to the pasture he put it in granny and set the throttle. He then got out of the truck and got in the bed and started tossing hay. I sat there in the cab amazed. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 85 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 85 | It has been discussed many times but I know what a hassle it is to find anything in search.

I know they are tractors for the road but sheesh. Lol

Back then you used what you had to get the job done.lol | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | Most trucks did not have PTOs but almost all Advance-Design and New Design trucks had throttle cables, except the Hydra-Matic-equipped trucks in 53/54-55. I wonder if the larger Hydra-Matic-equipped New Design GMC trucks (with and without PTOs) had a throttle cables? I'll be using the throttle on my COE with a PTO and a winch, I hope. I have always used the throttle cable to aid in starting, as described in the Owner's Manuals. Hydra-Matic trucks had an automatic choke and maybe a fast-idle setting? Also, I have sometimes used the throttle control when starting from a full-stop, in traffic, on a hill - this is not really necessary, just a matter of convenience. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 1,379 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 1,379 | Years ago I used them for cruise control on the highway but still need to hook up the throttle cable up on my 37. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 14 | I have a PTO on my 4 speed that drives a 3/4" shaft out to the rear of my box under the rear bumper. Any ideas what the farmer would have used this for? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 Moderator | | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 | Could be many things, hammer mill, manure spreader... some implements used belt drive. | | |
