Are the parts from American or LMC any better than Classic Parts in Kansas City?
I have just received my 4th part that has a manufacturing defect from them. No problems with returns, but I am getting tired of returning!! This time it is a door control for the drivers side. Part is clearly marked "L" but it is made with right hand parts. And the way it is made won't work on the right side either. They used parts from both sides! Where the hell is the quality control????

IMO, it's all the same Chinese junk from all suppliers. That's why NOS stuff brings big bucks on ePay.

Will it work like this

Could they have sent you the wrong year control?

at some point it changed to this
maybe it doesn’t make a difference

I've about given up on repo parts also. Lately been getting parts from s.wap meet section of the forum.
Picked up original headlight bucket, door lock, ignition, ignition bracket, 235 motor mounts, fuse holder, regulator, gauge light sockets,
original is my first choice now.
But I have probably put a few overseas kids through college in the past few years.
To thier credit Classic and others have the refund process perfected.

It needs to be like the first pic. It does look like the second pic, but you would have to push the lever to the front to open the door. That is not correct, I think!! Also, if the control is installed like the second pic the door panel will contact the mechanism.

Ive used parts from all of them & don't seem to have any problems. I'm right close to LMC & Classic parts so if I would I could march right back. If you want me to examine a part before you buy it I usually could.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it.

The manual for my truck (1950) shows a spacer glued to the door to keep the panel away from the control.
Mine was missing. Had to make one
...pic..click...

Maybe someone can advise on a part number for your year truck.
Good Luck

Strange... When I got my 49, it had 2 right-hand door relays. The left door handle would latch in the open position, and spring out of the locked position.
While hunting through the pick-and-pull, I found an old AD and decided to take the door relay.... It had 2 LEFT-hand relays!
Weird!

Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice)
\'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run.
My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787.

This is a good discussion. I will need this info when putting my 48 doors back together.

So. On my 48 do I look for the horizonal bars to be from the top or bottom of the handle - over to the mechanism. Looks like they run from the bottom of the handle mechanism to the latch mechanism.

thanks again

I just ran out to my shop and all the mechanisms I have are on the top of the handle. Like the pictures Dads50 and Brad show.

Thanks for the link to the thread. I tried to search for an answer, but I must be using the search feature wrong, because every time I use it I get 40 pages of everything BUT what I am searching for.
This is a pertanant quote from that thread...
"The part is listed in the catalogues for '47 - '55 1st. There isn't a specific part for th '47 to mid year '49. So I guess I got the only part that is available"
and this...
"The early ones had the link running parallel to the opening. They were changed mid-year in '49 for what ever reason is anybody’s guess and one is as good as the other. Regardless of the reasoning, I don't think they wanted to retool the inner doorframe so it was left as is and a fiber pad was glued to the frame where the rod crosses over so it won't rattle. The link sitting at and angle was how all of the later ones were till the end of the run".
And yes the door panel interferes with the control if it is mounted this way, so the spacer mentioned above would be required.
