yes you need a trans support crossmember for any automatic, they can't hang off the engine the way the manual trans did - there is none under either original manual trans - they're available from vendors, or fab yer own

Hey Bill What about Motor mounts? You don't want to mount the hole drive train from the ends. Don't you also have to change to side motor mounts?

if you have the original 283V8 front peg style mounts, then yes, you need to change to the side mounts, but most folks do that anyway on non-stock V8 installs - also you hafta actually notch or remove the original rear crossmember for a modern auto trans to fit without problems

I looked at putting a NP A833 4spd with the heavy iron case in a TF with the front mounts, and figured it would work to fab up a thin sheet steel piece to put between the bellhouse and block that had ears to replace the mounts on the old bellhouse ... might work with an auto too, but I'm not sure how adding that 1/4" space would affect things ohwell

I see no problem with that if a guy put the same size spacers between the flexplate and the torque converter

Jim - the 55-50 and 67-72 frames are very different, but you could prolly adapt it ... more common is the universal style tube piece available from the vendors

Not sure if that helps. It´s not a auto tranny but with the OD I run in the same problems on the 41 Sedan and ended up to fab my own "sub crossmember". Just to give you an Idea:

The rubber mount is (I confess it) of a 1943 Jeep.
