I have a 1964 Chevy C-10, 3/4 ton, 12 bolt, 18 spline axel rearend. I would like to know the fatory depth setting so I can calculate what shims to start out with to setup the pinion depth for a new carrier, ring, and pinion. The original pinon does not have a depth marked on it. The new pinion has a depth of 2.753 markes on it. Any one got any ideas on how to find the original depth or what shim pack to start with.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

If so this is where you have to start.Install the same shim pack under the pinion bearing. If you want to make thing easier buy an extra pinion bearing and hone it out .Other wise you have to press the bearing back off if you reshim. If you have no experience in setting it up I would suggest finding some one. It's an art and takes some time and patience .Good Luck

Like 61 Suburban said find someone with prior experience to help you with this.

He also told me to get an extra set of pinion bearings so he could hone one set out to use for setting up the shims. Thanks for your advice.
