I have alot of task force chevys but decided to save this really nice 49 GMC from the scrappers. I traded my own scrap pile for this truck and a 56 2 ton GMC with a running 302 in it. My questions is, will the 302 fit right in this 49? I don't know my GMC motors that well. It currently appears to have a non running 60's style chevy 6 in it at this time. Thanks for any advice.

The '49 GMC (1/2 ton?) most likely came with a 228 in it. I think the 302 has similar exterior dimensions/mounts and should be a straight-forward installation. However, wait to hear from someone who really knows.

Hy tri5trucking and guys, yes the 302 will bolt right in place, if you use the correct engine front mount plate, and bellhousing, hope that helps.

To elaborate on what 3B said...

The 302 probably has side mounts. You will need the front mount plate from an earlier GMC or a 235 Chevy.

Being in a 2-ton it probably has the bigger flywheel and clutch. If the engine in the '49 is a 235 you can use that bellhousing but you will need to find a 6 bolt GMC pickup flywheel. A '54-55 will have a 6 bolt 6V flywheel and a '56-59 will have a 6 bolt 12V flywheel.

Thanks for the info. It appeared to look like a 235 currently in the truck and I had heard the GMC motors were longer. I'll know more about it when I get it home tommorrow.

Yes the GMC is longer. Unless the '49 is Canadian built the crossmember had to be modified to install the 235.

Brought the 49 home today. This is a little different territory for me and all my task force trucks but I couldn't pass a pile of scrap for a truck trade. Also traded for a 56 GMC former fire truck with a good running 302 motor for the 49 which currently has a partial 235 in it.

Looks like you got a nice one. You're right--that IS a little different than what you usually play with! But everyone needs to broaden their horizons once in a while, right?

So if I want to convert to a 12 volt system I need the 12V flywheel?

No, The 6 volt starter will work fine on 12 volts. Just remember not to crank it too long, as that will cuse the windings to burn up over time.

If you want to put a 12 volt starter on, then you will need a 12 bolt flywheel. The 6 volt flywheel will work for a bit, but it will get chewed up pretty fast by the 12 volt starter.
However, the 12 volt 6 bolt flywheel is much easier to find.
