Morning all.
I've already searched through the forums and apologize if I'm asking something that's already been covered. I'll keep it short and simple. I have completley rebuilt my 64' with the original 230 and 3 on the tree. After driving it for over a year now I've decided to replace the original 3 speed with an OD. Can anyone out there tell me please if they have done this and what they used with both the good and bad? I have given thought to a Saginaw 4 speed,S10- T-5,SM420, 4 speed using the tree shifter and a cble under the dash for reverse, etc....
Got to do something to get the rpm's down on the hiway.

in the dallas craigslist is a 3 speed OD that will bolt into your truck, make sure you get the wiring harness, relay, and od lock out cable. Make sure that the OD unit stays full of oil, if not it will lock up or break. It always keeps the ool to the main gear case. if not, go with a 200r4 which has vacuum shift.
If you go with a sag 4, change your rear end to use 4th as an OD

The simplest & probably cheapest & best in some opinions is the T-5 from an S-10. The Saginaw or SM420 will not give you o-drive. The 3 speed 0-drive like Dw is refering to is good but they are a little hard to find & some parts for them are real hard to come by.

I am using the 3 speed with overdrive that dwragon is referring to. It is a nice set up that would be a bolt in swap for your 3 speed. It reduces RPM's 30% in overdrive. Here's some discussion and a site with the original manuals if you would like to read up on them:
