I have a 1952 Chevy truck that was my grandfathers and from what I can tell it’s all original. The Serial number is GKPJ9754. It has a 4 speed floor shifter and I’m trying to figure out if it is a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck. I have been told that a 4 speed floor shifter is very rare for a ½ ton so I’m trying to find if it’s truly a ½ ton truck. Using Vin Buster it says the following:

Manufactured October, 1952

Model: 3100 ½ ton

Wheelbase: 116 inches

Plant: Oakland, CA


I am really confused though. Looking underneath the truck it has double spring sets which are usually a dead give-a-way that it’s indeed a 3/4 ton truck. So, the 4-speed would be appropriate. But, then the VIN doesn't support that scenario. What is going on here??? Very strange indeed... does anybody know where I can get more information about this? My grandfather has long since passed away so the serial numbers are really all I have to look up what I’m working with. Thank you for your help and time…

Thats a 1/2 ton,Will. Those extra rear springs are overloads,or "helpers". If it was a 3/4 ton, you would have 8 lug wheels,a longer bed,3600 emblems on the side of the hood, and other differences. Dont sweat the 3 or 4 speed,it was just ordered that way.

Wow, you appear to have a very original truck. That is awesome! The fourspeed gives you everything that a three speed does plus the extra convenience of a very low 1st gear. Oh, and as stated it is a 1/2 Ton truck.

Ok thank you. I wanted to be sure it was a 1/2 ton before i started ordering parts.

The 4-speed according to the 51 Salesman data book is option number 318B HD synchromesh. In 1951 this otion priced out at $41.55 delivered. I am not sure rare is appropriate in Utah where I live the 3-speed seems to be more rare and the 4-speed common 60-70% of trucks I see here carry this option so it may be more of a regional ordering preference. Looks like a very nice truck best of luck and enjoyment with it. One more comment the trucks don't have a lot of information available that you can track in the way of options and equipment so take lots of pictures and ask questions on items you may be wondering about someone here will be able to help with the answer.

i have heard the term 3100 "commercial" 1/2 ton...maybe that pertains to you

Recheck that "G", should be a number in the first position.

K=1952
P=3100 1/2 ton
J= month of October

It might have been a 6 and I just read it wrong. It looked like a G to me but your probably right. Here is a ctappy picture of the Serial Number
