Engine is new with less than 5 hours time on it. What is the difference if any between these engines and the truck ones? My son worked a couple of summers at Mercrusier in Stillwater and he said the only difference is in the gaskets. True? Decals on engine indicate 200 hp and 93 octane fuel. Any help would be appreciated. | | |

and it's for a 250 and,,, From the octane requirement sounds like they have changed the compression. Have you checked any of the casting numbers?

#70719 12/28/2006 5:41 AM | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,742 | No hands-on knowledge with the sixes, but the Mercruiser V-8's have a tendency to be hot rods, with more compression, hotter cams, and usually bigger carburetors. if they're reccomending 93 octane, I'd guess it's 9.5:1 compression or higher.

engine block 3921970 66-76 292
head 3927763 67-72 74cc chamber
two other numbers on side of head between spark plugs were 7768 and 5060.
Has Mercruiser alum valve cover. Will be installing engine in a '46 1/2 ton and adding electronic ignition from a later 292. Any one with experience in this model? Have installed a pacer independent front end under the truck. Plan on using a 4 speed since I have a 3:08 rear end. | | |

I,ve worked on hundreds of 292,s. Tough engine. The only weak point is the exhaust manifolds. They burn em out & warp them. I would use headers or maybe the marine version has something better then the trucks.

I think that's mostly the V-8's, though. Lots of 350's and 454's out there like that!

On Inliners there have been Mercrusier threads and some say they run great and others say the cams are all wrong for a motor vehicle. It may be worthwhile to degree it to be sure. | | |
