I have a beauty for you guys its a 1954 chevrolet 1700 Canadian made all original. I am a 27 years firefigther veteran from Quebec Canada. I was the last guy to operate this truck in 1998. It was put in storage until 2008 when somebody wanted to made a flat bed truck with it. I told myself over my death body.I since convince our association to restored it. We are just fooling around with a 1953 fire truck engine as a possible transplant into a military 6x6 Chev C60x Cab 13 Canadian Military Pattern..... our engine is a 248 we were hoping for a 270 cu. inches...... what is the size of your engine?.... and what is tha brass contraption under the carburator.... is it a governer..... and is it powered by the on board water pump demand...?

I will mesure the motor for you, (it is big and heavy). On top of the carburator yes it is a governer, it is use to control the water pressure ( When 2 lines or more are used )and also to protect the pump against water hammer. Overall lenght (including bell housing)= 40" in. W/O bell housing = 33" in.
Width (manifold included) = 16" in.
Bell housing (including motor mounts)= 21" in.
Hope this help.
Any salvagable parts on the firetruck.
P.S. I go halfway up to Ottawa 3 weeks out of 4.

They look to be using Heavier GMC axles on some of the photos. You would never see the Heavier, larger 6 stud wheels on a U.S. built '47-'54 Chevy Big bolt. Does this truck have a GMC 248, 270, or 302 engine, or Chevy 235, or 261 engine. Does it have a SM420 4 spd. tranny, or Heavy Duty Clark 5 spd. tranny, that GMC usually paired, with the Heavy axle trucks. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 18 | The engine is a GMC 270 cu. in. and the axel as far as i know is stock from GM,

The tranny is a 4 speed with a Eaton 2-speed 16,600 rear axel | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,548 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,548 | Yes, Your truck is equipped with GMC chassis, & running gear, like all Canadian built Chevrolet "Maple Leafs" were equipped with up until the "Maple Leaf" name was dropped with the 1952 model. Noticed in your photo link that the gvw is 18000lb.'s instead of 16000lb.'s as a U.S. built 2 ton model. I've got literature on a Canadian built 1949 Chevrolet "Maple Leaf" 1700 series 3 ton truck, that is pretty much spec.'d the same as yours. You have the same Clark 5000lb. front axle, & Eaton 16600lb. rear axle, as the GMC 450 series 3 ton COE, I recently sold. A comparable U.S. built '54 Chevrolet 2 ton, would have came only with a 4000lb. front axle, & 13000 lb. Timken rear axle. You have a very unique truck. I like it alot. So according to my info., i'd say it'd be safe to say you have a Heavy Duty 3 ton 1700 series. | | |
