The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Trailer hitch for 54

I am doing a "down to the frame" rebuild and am trying to look ahead a bit. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to add a trailer hitch to a 54? Am anticipating a small trailer to haul tools and wood -- nothing major. Would like it to be as inconspicuous as possible. Thanks in advance. Bob

Go see your local trailer service center. They can probably fix you up with a class 2 hitch that could be adapted to bolt to the frame.

Another option might be a scavenger hunt in the salvage yard.

I just installed a frame mount hitch in my '48. I got it for free, but I have also seen the same in scrap yards. It has bolt-on side flanges that bolted to the frame of the donor truck. I had to cut these down, and re-weld them in a 90 deg fashion to lay on top of the frame, and the receiver peeks out just below the rear bed cross member, above the stock bumper. I have several drop heads, but it may require a straight head...still have that to work out. It will handle a heavier load than the truck will pull!!!

I have been thinking about installing a hitch on my bolt for pulling utility/popup trailer. Reese has one made for RVs that is universal and bolts to the frame. Looks like it would work well and reese is pretty well regarded. See it here.
