I'm not wanting to tackle this myself. Does anyone know of someone in the KC area that has experience with this conversion? He was my first call.
Gmoniz, I'm not comfortable doing this conversion myself. This is my everyday driver and I'd like someone to do it quickly and properly. I've just got too much on my plate to tackle. I have emailed someone in the freebies section that has a rear end. I thought maybe using it for the conversion, this would allow me to keep driving ol blue. The forum article explained that the Patricks 3.55 gears are the expensive way to do the job. The inexpensive way is to use a chevy car rear axle assembly with 3.55 gears from a '50-'54 powerglide equipped car.
The details are in the article and it sure worked for me. The only complicating factor on my '36 was the 3.55 hypoid gears wouldn't fit in the '36 spiral bevel housing so I adapted in a '37 Chevy car rear axle, shortening the torque tube and driveshaft and moving the spring perches inboard.
The replacement rear axle can be prepared while you keep your driver onn the road.

The gears from it can be used in the 46 on back rear ends. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | |
