Hey brothertruckers,
I have a 49/1ton flat bed. I want to convert it from one exhust to dual, so I can put stacks on it. What am I looking at, easy-hard. Any tips would be super.

You can have the original manifold split or get a set of headers. Have a muffler shop build the systems. Sounds like a cool idea.

Or you can even use a 1-IN/2-OUT muffler, a poor mans way of doing it.

Unless you just want the twins a single 2 1/2'" with out a muffler sounds pretty good at about 3 grand and a hard pull.

I had stacks on a '52 one time they sounded great but the only drawback was the sooty condesation they blew out on start up in the morning.
Have them curved on the ends to the sides of the truck and you might be OK

So what engine do you have? A new V8 is easy to make duals. An old 235 or 216 and you'll have to get a new / altered manifold or split the exhaust somewhere past the manifold.

Do you plan on running a muffler before the stacks? Wonder how noisy it would be with no muffler and stacks running straight up.

What size pipe are you going to run? A 3" pipe, dual stacks, on a 216... is NOT going to help your performance. A single 2" might, or a single 2.5" on a 235/261. A high reving 292 might like a 3", but that's pushing it.

A pipe (of the correct ID) needs to be long enough to allow exhuast gas momentum to help "pull" the gasses out of the chamber, but not so long that it restricts the air flow out of the chamber. It's a fine line, and I don't know of any certain way to determine it.

Old tractor pullers say to put a long straight pipe on, then run a crayon mark the entire length of the pipe. Run the engine till it gets completely warmed up. The location where the crayon mark has stopped melting is where the pipe should be cut. Sounds like voo doo to me, but maybe it works.

Jhaa_lives,the crayon trick does work.Tayninh,I made duals on my 53 wrecker by mounting a piece of 4"X4" steel box tube between the frame rails and behind the cab.I welded the ends closed and brought two, 2" stainless stacks up from there with flanges welded to the top of the 4X4 box.Another flange was welded on the bottom for an inlet.With no muffler and rain caps it sounds great especially on a heavy long pull.

Thanks guys for you thoughts. Still thinking. My nephew told me about going to a muffler place. So all I have to do is find a how to split the exhust manifold?
