I'm pulling the trans on my 1950 3/4 ton
the manual says remove the top 2 bolts and insert guide pins is this necessary?
and if so does any one know the diameter of the pins

You can make your own out of some longer 1/2" bolts just cut the heads off a chamfer the end of them a little bit. Couple bucks each and you will be all set. You really don't need them if you use and engine hoist or similar set-up once it slides out it is a handful but a complete one only weighs 135lbs.

i used a trans jack and it pulled straight out.
I can see where the pins may be useful during installation (in about a year)

i needed the pins once for the three trannys that have installed. i use my engine hoist the problem i had when i needed the pins was because i was doing it alone as always and i couldnt get the splines to line up. once i stuck it in gear then turned the output shaft slightly it poped right in. it would help if you have someone to operate the lift while your guiding it in.

when you use an engine hoist I assume you are going through the cab? do you just run a strap around the trans?

i take out two top corner bolts diagnally and bolt a short little chain on it and it hangs perfectly level that is after you remove the shifter of coarse. i go in thru the pass. door with the lift. adjust the chain length so that you dont hit the dash with the end of the lift when your at your highest point where the input shaft is at the right height to push it into the throwout bearing. due to the configuration of the 40 i didnt have enough reach. there i just slid a 4' 11/4" pipe into the end of the hoist arm to get the reach i needed.

If you do make your own pins then cut a slot in the top where you removed the bolt head. Easier to remove after with a big screwdriver.
