Not too much further down this list is good advise on rust removal, but are there good, safe methods for removing corrosion from aluminum items like Carb and fuel pumps?

I tried using a commercial product normally used to clean aluminum window frames. Bad move. Totally spotted the finish on a carb.

Sandblast ??...I have done a bunch of intakes and carbs ...now I tape of the internal passages and just do the outside.
A good wash afterwards removes the leftover grit.
And you have a as NEW CAST part.

It would be nice to hear from a pro on this one. Isn't a chemical dip a common method of cleaning carburetor parts? Instead of using silica/sand blast, wouldn't soda blast, walnut shell blast, and as a last resort, plastic media blast be better (if available)?

if aluminum is really oxidized, mechanical polishing is the only thing that'll clean it .... aren't carbs originally anodized or coated with some zinc compound? carb cleaner is available at the FLAPS, or failing that Brake Kleen ... I believe Eastman has kits for carb refinishing, including paint that gives a "factory" look finish
