Once again I need some expert advise. I recently put in a 1953 235 motor into my 1953 chevy 3100 pickup truck. I am pretty sure the motor came out of a car and the modifications went very good. Swapped transmission, bell housing, etc..
My question is this: Does the 235 need to have the "oil canister" put on it? There doesn't seem to be the oil lines like the 216 had. Does anyone know? Are there pictures showing the oiling lines available out there somewhere? Up close pictures of the "drivers" side of the engine would be very helpful if someone out there has those, showing the oil lines. I really would appreciate any and all input.

Hy CJB, that 53 car engine may have hydraulic valve lifters and shim adjusted precision bearings, if the car was equipped with a Powerglide transmission. The oiling system on those engines is quite different from the 216 system, however you can mount a bypass filter on the post 53 engines. I don't have the pictures you seek, and I don't have the required "skills" to post them here if I had them, but I'm sure someone will be along with what you need.

Thanks very much for the info "Gabster". Not quite sure what you mean by "bypass filter" and why that would be necessary to put that on. By the way, when I bought the engine it had a 3 speed transmission, and I am not sure if that was all original but it sure looked like it was to me. Sure would be sweet if I didn't have to put that canister back on. Hope someone has pictures! Thanks again and I appreciate your response, it's very helpful.

The 235 was only available in cars with auto trans in 53' as 3B points out. I am not sure what you are describing as the "oil canister" unless it is the optional bypass filter used on many cars and some trucks. You can look in the Tech Tips at the top of our Homepage and find a ton of info (pictures too) on oil filters. Hope this helps.

Thanks 53Moneypit! That was very helpful indeed! What I have is a oil filter assembly from a 53 that needs to go back on to the other 53 just installed. Should not be too hard to figure out now that I know what it is and where it goes thanks to the drawings shown and your referral. The drawing for the 1952 looks exactly the way mine should be and hopefully the oil lines will fit perfectly too. Thanks again!

PM me and I will furnish pictures of my 53 235 with a factory by pass filter set up. Mine is a full pressure motor out of a 53 passenger car with a powerglide trans. The lines are available new no problem. you do need a restriction in the inlet line to maintain pressure properly............gmguy

gmguy, thanks so much that will be great to see those pics. If you need to send them email to me here is my address: [email protected]. By restrictor you must be referring to going from 3/8" to like 1/4" or whatver the case may be? The old oil line is like 3/8" and the female openings on the block are much smaller. I look forward to seeing what you have available via pictures, and again your help is very much appreciated!

The filter is called "bypass" because it takes a portion of the oil from the pressure feed, filters it and releases it into the pan. Therefore that oil bypasses the rest of the system.

The central tube in my filter canister has a very small hole to let the oil from the surrounding cartridge into the outlet tube. Some setup use a restriction in the supply pipe.

In general, the oil feed is taken from the pressure supply, sometimes from a Tee at the oil pressure gauge takeoff and the return line is attached to a fitting threaded into a hole in the block, just above the bottom of the block.

Man, I really appreciate the instruction sheet for the by-pass filter installation.
Very helpful and I thank you for your time and effort.

It's funny, never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.

Standing in a church does't make one a christian anymore than having a truck in a garage make it a 53 chevy.
