Other than power, are there any advantages between the 270 & 261 for regular open road use? I've had no 261 experience.
Thanks

The 270 is a GMC engine & the 261 is Chevy. The 270 is a more rugged engine.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

The differences include the alloy used in casting the block. The GMC was made of better stuff.

The 270 should top the list in all of the above. The advantage of the 261 is parts availability. I imagine in New Zealand it may be hard to find parts for either engine. Of course a 302 gmc would out perform the others and bolt right in to your cckw.

I think for fuel economy it would be about a wash, and would depend on how well your carburetor is tuned. The AA-1 carb on a 302 (might be on a 270 also) or a Carter would generally outperform a Rochester B on a 261, although you could swap a Carter to a 261. You might also want to run vacuum advance, some of the big GMC's don't have one. 261's do.

Still plenty of 216's, 235's & 270's over here tucked away in sheds, and rebuilds are no problem, but I don't personally know anyone with a 261 - maybe it wasn't a common option imported here.

The 270 in my CCW is still fine, I was wondering about a 261 for a lighter truck. Sounds like another 270 is still the way to go though - Thanks again
