I finally am able to buy a second vehicle to do some much needed major work on the truck. one of the options I'm looking at is rebuilding an engine so I can do a fast swap.
the spare I have is a late model 235 from a car. It has hydraulic lifters. Is the cam from the truck engines, with solid lifters, ground to give more torque? I do want the torque and obviously have no interest in a racing engine. should I replace the hydraulic lifters and cam from the car engine with solid lifters and a solid lifter cam?
besides all that, the rest should be good to go, right? the cylinder walls are nice so I won't go oversize (budget doesn't allow for machining anyway). It's got the 848 head so that's good.
any other advice to consider when reworking a passenger car engine to a truck engine? thanks!

There is not that much difference in the cam specks. If the lifters & cam are good I would use them. Hone the cyl. walls & clean them good with soap & water. Replace the rings & inserts & send the head out for a rebuild. That will perk it up.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

More HP with the hyd lifter cam and less maintenance the lifters should under normal use never need to be readjusted after they are set. Also quieter.

Keep the hydraulics. New rings, bearings, seals. Valve job, too.
There are cams available to enhance, and raising compression would certainly help...BUT...your 4-speed will easily allow driving with a stock motor, just not much heavy hauling at speed (or drag racing ;))

If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.

For sure get the valves done, if you have the money, true up the head surface, it flattens out the head in case its warped and will raise the compression a bit.

I do a lot of heavy hauling. so much that the axle hits the rubber blocks on the frame. always goes 65 mph down the interstate. and that's with the stock 235.

anyway, I might keep the hydros. I'm afraid I'll miss the sewing machine sound though. Rings bearings etc was already planned, just as a head job, did one to the engine that's currently in the truck and that turned out to be some well-spent time. If this head is still straight (whcih I still have to check) the work on the head is super cheap as well, lots of gain for little $$
