I got a 4 speed off a junk stovebolt engine that a bolter was throwing out. I have no idea where or what was the original truck. It works fine I have it on the back of my 216 1/2 ton but I would like to find the origins and get gaskets etc. With all the experience on this web site, can someone tell me where would be the id numbers for this tranny would be and what web site if not this one could tell me what chevy vehicle this came out of so I can start the restore project.

This is a 4 speed, with a flipper lever for reverse, the stick can be removed by 1/4 turn of the cap where the stick loads in the top of the tranny, granny first gear and 3 speeds after etc.

Thanks for the help,

Rick,,,,,,,,,

Hy elmer46, I don't know what the designation for that tranny is, and I don't think I've ever seen it identified by a number. It is a "crashbox" 4spd, produced between 1937 and 1948, it is the transmission design before the SM420, hope that helps.

We called them sliding gear transmissions and I have seen them designated as SG4. The SM in the later transmissions stands for synchro mesh.
