Which is easier for a novice?
#1 Swap out the rearend or
#2 Change the the gears in the rear end.
Have a clunking noise when backing up u-joints seem ok.

Changing an entire rear is easier than setting a ring gear and pinion. Have you had your U joints apart. There isn't much you can see from the outside.

Ujoints are fairly cheap. If yours are old and something clunks, you have to open them to check them. Might as well put in new ones and know you won't need to worry about them for a long time.

Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice)
\'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run.
My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.
