I did a search and did not find the answer for my question. Picked up an S 10 tank for my '48 today, and obviously it has several hose connections, and I want to hook up a suction line only. Can I just plug off the remaining 3 lines, while still using the vent line? And what precautions should I take to make sure the electrical wires and connections do not create a spark?

I plugged the unused fittings on my tank by finding an appropriate size bolt and sliding into the rubber line and putting a hose clamp to hold the bolt in place.

As far as electrical wires I use crimp fittings and electrical heat shrink tubing.

All those extra tubes/holes are for fuel injected engines. Plug them up and you will be ok.

bowtiefan,

By looking at your blog I am assuming you are running the straight six only with an s-10 gas tank right? I have a similar situation, only I am running a 350 engine. One problem you will have is the fuel gauge. What I ultimately want to do is adapt the original sending unit into the s-10 tank with an adapter plate. That way the original gauge will read properly. Reason why it won't is two things. 1. the ohms in the sending units are different, 2. the original gauge is 6 volt (easy fix there with a reducer and or an aftermarket 12v gauge) But, having the gauge as 12v still might not get you any readings from the s-10 sending unit because the ohms are different. I have not found any straight answer on getting all three equations to work.

As for your fuel lines. I am not certain because I have not fiddled with the Straight six and or older engines yet (even though I have them). So I don't know if they have return lines. I can't see how or why they wouldn't but it sounds like they don't. The s-10 tank has three smaller lines on it, one is return, one is fuel and one is vent I believe.

The electrical stuff. I am assuming you wanted to hook up your sending unit to the s-10 tank right? again issues from above. But if you try that out, let me know how it goes, and or I'll let you know as I am hooking my tank up very soon. Again I feel like I will have to adapt the OG sending unit into the s-10 unit. You shouldn't need any of the electrical stuff from the s-10 tank if you aren't concerned with the fuel gauge at this point. Your engine has a mechanical pump and will pump the fuel that way.

Ok, back to the sender. I had my head up......I wasn't thinking of the fuel pump that was on the sender. So that has been removed, and I now understand that the sender and gauge probably are not compatable. The original sender was shot on the tank, so I may have to buy a replacement '48 sender and attach it to the S10 tank opening. May take some modification.

bowtiefan,

Yeah you can get aftermarket senders from say classicparts.com
http://www.classicparts.com/Sending-Units/products/837

I am probably going to do the same thing. The opening on the s-10 tank is a far larger diameter, so yeah an adapter plate is going to be needed. I did measure the depth of the tanks one time. I think they are pretty close if I remember. So hopefully it will work. I know the depth of the tank makes a difference.

keep us posted on what you do. I will also keep you guys posted. Again though, I am using a 350 in mine with an s-10 tank
with the original fuel gauge, 12v system.

I have also come to find out the original tanks are 17.5 gallons and the s-10 tank is 16 gallon. So I am not sure how much a difference that will make.
