MY OBJECTIVES: I want To retain the 235/6 and some day push it to
200-plus horsepower keeping it in the 50s era. The 235 came from a car
235 PG. I have had a Patrick's 3:55:1 Kit put in my rearend (the surgury
wasn't to bad). Now my delema is I want to swap out the tranny, I have a
number of options here, but the closed driveshaft is my big problem. I have
about 1K into it and really don't have the resurces to start over, but may
half to. I already know about Patricks Tranny kit. I E-Mailed him and He
called me that evening {what a fine man},to fined out if he know of a way
to alter the rearend to make it a open driveshaft. We talked along time
about the benifits of the Tourch Tube set-up on the 53 Chevy and that I
should order His Kit for the stock tranny, Understandably.I am looking to improve highway speed with less stress on the
engine, and good off the line take off with good higway speed. I am not
really looking to hotrod it. The A-833 new process Trans seems for me to
be the way to go, exept on one of ower snow days here in Colorado, granny
would be nice, and the tourch tube. Refrence: Grabbing for Gears Beyond

I got a rusted out 49 Chevy PU witch had a open driveshaft in it
(car,3/4 ton, but not stock), I don't know, including a driveline, and
dissassembled the hole truck. The front housing on the 49 rear end

gear inside the axel are 3697702 GM 10-39 9 54, 3.90 gear ratio.

Do I also have a option of having the Tourch Tub shortend ,Some How ?.

Any help on the Closed Drive Shaft (tourch tube) ? would be most

Someone once told me that the ring\pinion assembly out of 55-59 Chevy
trucks will bolt in the earier housing of
51-54. I don't know for sure if this is
fact or fiction, plus I doubt your 3.55
kit you installed would work then. smile

I converted from closed drive shaft (aka, torque tube) to open drive shaft. I took the pumpkin out of my '49, a 4.11, and replaced it with a '57 3.90. Not much of a drop but an easy way to go to open drive shaft. I then found a '55 3sp+overdrive transmission, measured the driveshaft and found one at a bone yard and I was good to go. At 3rd overdrive I'm running at 2000 rpm's with 215 85r 16 Michelins on stock rims. I can keep up or pass traffic at will, shocks the hell out of people to see an old girl go that fast. Oh, '56 235 with '848 head', Fentons, dual exhaust, 2bbl Holley-Webber.

Has anybody out there just used an AD 3/4 drive line, shortened the rear piece and stuck a Nova/Camaro rear end in a 1/2 ton to get Hwy gears?? Seems this would be a cheap way to go!!! Thanks Mick Inniss
