I converted from closed drive shaft (aka, torque tube) to open drive shaft. I took the pumpkin out of my '49, a 4.11, and replaced it with a '57 3.90. Not much of a drop but an easy way to go to open drive shaft. I then found a '55 3sp+overdrive transmission, measured the driveshaft and found one at a bone yard and I was good to go. At 3rd overdrive I'm running at 2000 rpm's with 215 85r 16 Michelins on stock rims. I can keep up or pass traffic at will, shocks the hell out of people to see an old girl go that fast. Oh, '56 235 with '848 head', Fentons, dual exhaust, 2bbl Holley-Webber.
