Just bought a 1966 Suburban 305 V6. Runs great

Don't know where it's headed yet. Probably as close to stock as I can.

I would like to travel in it, so the overdrive is a must. Why were these things geared so low? Seems like the motors had plenty of low-end torque to handle 60-65 at 2000-2200 RPM?

Anyway, lots of questions to come.

Welcome to the Bolt Jon. Several panel and burb guys around the bolt. Your in good company. I like your plan. For best results on your questions always try to post in the appropiate forum for the best results...... but don't worry, if it would fit another forum lots better a moderator will probably move it to help you out.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Welcome Jon, the half tons were geared low and the heavier the truck the lower they were geared. Gas was cheap in 1966 and they usually didn't travel far from home back then. Nowadays those old trucks are often modified to attain higher speeds, different options out there.
